Lyric (and his mom) gave us all a good laugh this afternoon during snack time. We loved his crazy banana man!

We enjoyed a fun day with our special people! We watched this video, played at recess, and had a yummy lunch! We spent the month of September learning all about sound. We learned about vibrations, pitch, and volume throughout this unit. Our final activity was to work with a partner to create a musical instrument. Students planned what type of instrument they would make and then worked together to create the final product! Everyone worked so well together and the end result was 12 awesome instruments! Since we worked with a partner and cannot take these instruments home, here is a music video to share our hard work! Enjoy! We have started a new incentive for students who achieve ROLE MODEL status for the day! When a student ends the day on Role Model for going above and beyond expectations, they will receive a sticker for their chart. Once their chart is full, they can trade it in for a coupon for something fun! Some coupons include - choose from the treasure chest, sit in the teacher's chair for the day, write with a fancy pen all day, or bring a stuffed animal to school!
We are now practicing literacy centers independently! Woo! We have 4 centers that we visit each week - the library center, poetry center, writing center, and word work center. This gives us time to practice different literacy skills while also learning to be more independent! During this time Miss Petersen will start pulling students for reading testing and eventually start small guided reading groups! We've been working hard for the past week to earn all the rocks from Miss P.'s jar! Rocks can only be earned when we are all working together to follow expectations! Many of the rocks came from compliments from other teachers in the hallways on how quiet we were! Our reward was an extra recess on this beautiful day! How perfect! Can you tell that we're just a little bit excited?! :) This week we learned about how to be a great learning partner! We practiced by reading with our partner and sitting "EEKK!" - elbow to elbow, knee to knee, with the book in the middle so we can both see! We had such a fun first week in first grade! We learned about classroom expectations, read some great back-to-school books, and learned about being a classroom family! Sadly, the 2 day week got away from Miss Petersen and we totally missed first day and class photos! Oh no! (There's always next week right?!) We were so excited to bring Play-Doh to school, so OF COURSE, we had to bust it out on the second day! We will use this play-doh to make letters and build words throughout the year. Here are just a few friends who made their name! |
