We earned another rock jar party! This time the reward was Miss Petersen coming to P.E.! (Yikes!) Miss Petersen learned that Mr. Dees isn't messing around in there! Even "Fun Friday" was hard work! As one friend so nicely put it..."Miss P., I don't think you've played in a while!"
Enjoy our "before" and "after" selfies! Can you tell we are sweaty and exhausted?! :)

Late post! (Sorry!)
We spent a few weeks doing some in depth research on our ocean animal! We did research with our partner by reading books and using the iPad to check the internet! We learned how to take notes and turn those notes into our own sentences. We learned about our animal's body, food, habitat, and life cycle. We also spent a few days in the computer lab learning how to search for a picture, copy and paste it into a Word document, save it, and print it! We can't wait to share all of our hard work during our Publishing Party! (Tuesday, April 11th at 2:45!) We have started our all about unit of study. This year we chose as a first grade team to do different habitats and research the different animals that live within them! Our class is focusing on the ocean! We are excited to not only research and learn about our animal, but present it in a poster to our other first grade friends and parents! (Publishing party date TBD!)
If you'd like to do some extra research at home online or at the public library, please feel free to do so! It would be great if your child could bring the additional information into school to use while we take research notes during writing. Below you'll find a list of the animals the students are researching... Parrot fish - Brooke & Kade Eel - Brix & Logan F. Whale shark - Cale & Tristin Sea Turtle - Lyric & Savannah Sea Horse - Tanner & Logan R. Starfish - Lexi & Kendall Octopus - Stella & Chloe Killer Whale - Lily & Cooper Sea Lion - Carson & Logan P. Crab - Myles & Tessa Dolphin - Shelby, Caitlynn, & Renee Puffer fish - Miss Petersen We spent our week in science learning all about stars. We had fun watching videos and reading books to look at different constellations in the night sky but it was even more fun to be creative and make our own! First we drew our ideas on a white piece of paper and added dots to our drawings to serve as stars. Then we taped it to a black piece of paper and used a push pin to make the holes in our papers. (We had a discussion about safely using this tool and everyone was very careful and did a great job! ) This was a great way to end our week and now we have some awesome constellations on our window! You can hear our class say the pledge on the radio (WIXY 100.3) on Thursday, March 9 at 7:00am! Here is the link to check out when you can hear the rest of North Ward!
http://wixy.com/pledge-of-the-day/ It's always exciting when we find that a new book box has arrived from Scholastic! Thanks to all your recent orders, we were able to get 9 new books for our classroom! I thought I would show off everything I was able to get for our classroom for FREE! When parents order, I earn free books and points towards books for our classroom library! We are really trying to "beef up" our nonfiction selection, but also like to get a few fun fiction books as well! It is awesome to be able to get some new books since we browse and read from our classroom library on a daily basis! :) Thanks again! Happy reading!
We really upgraded our library experience today by listening to a story from Mr. Penne! As our school librarian, he has offered to do a read aloud after we check out books each week. We enjoyed listening to his story today about Abraham Lincoln. (I haven't seen all our friends sit this still or be this engaged in a story in a while! It's nice to listen to someone new sometimes!)
We had a wonderful Valentine's Day in first grade. I'm so proud of this class and the kindness and love they show each other on a daily basis! That is what made today extra special! :) We worked hard on making some unique Love Monster bags to hold our goodies from our sweet friends! Unfortunately the slippery bags caused many parts of our monsters to fall off during the party and as we walked down the hallway! They were cute while they lasted though! Life in first grade can be a crazy place! So crazy that sometimes our classroom website has to take a back seat to the learning and fun! Even though your wonderful child updates you on our weekly classroom activities....here's a recap of what our blog has been missing over the past 3 months! :) 1) We had a SUPER Halloween celebration! First grade teachers showed off our super powers - teaching! :) We also attended a PBIS party where we danced, played games, and ran through an obstacle course. A great time was had by all! (I regret not taking a class picture in our costumes! Darn!) 2) In November we started MATH workshop! We do not have time to do this daily, but try to do it several times a week. It is a great opportunity for students to work on some skills independently and get repetitive practice of things like math facts! Additionally, it gives me an opportunity to meet with them in smaller groups and give instruction at their level! Each lesson begins with a whole group mini lesson, then students move through 4 different centers - M: Math Facts, A: At my seat, T: Teacher's desk, H: Hands on. 3) On Veteran's Day, we had a visit from a very special veteran! Lily's mom - Stacy Dudzinski came in to talk to the students about her experiences and read a story. We had a lot of great questions about her experiences but our favorite part was trying on all her different jackets and hats! Thank you for your service AND for taking time to speak with our class Ms. Dudzinski! :) 4) In November, we also had our own Thanksgiving Feast! (Kind of!) Students were each given a bag of different treats that represented foods that would have been present at the first feast between the Pilgrims and Native Americans. (For example - cheese balls for pumpkins, crasins for cranberries.) We then took on the task of sorting out our individual feasts and graphing them! We had a fun time seeing which type of food we each had the most of in our baggies since they were all different. But obviously the best part was getting to CHOW DOWN at the end! :) 5) In December, we sang and danced like professionals at our winter concert! We were the cutest "flakes" out there! :) 6) Also in December we took on the very fun (and messy) job of building and decorating our own gingerbread houses! We had a lot of parent helpers that not only sat with their child, but moved around the room to help other friends secure the walls of their houses on the first day! Day 2 was filled with LOTS of candy for decorating! What a great time! 7) After enjoying a nice break from school, we came back ready to learn! We started off the new year by taking a computer based reading test to determine reading levels for our school's library books! Students worked hard and tried their best. Now everyone has a colored sticker of book that they look for based on their reading level range, so hopefully we are able to do more independent reading at home! 8) For the 100th day of school, we all aged quite a bit! There were many 100 year olds roaming around our classroom. Surprisingly they were very energetic for their age! :) We had a blast doing 100 day themed centers like making a structure with 100 cubes, making 100 stamp books, flipping a coin 100 times, and writing all the way to 100! Once again...a class picture was forgotten, which is unfortunate because we had some adorable 100 year olds! 9) And most recently...as sickness hits North Ward Elementary, we found a way to make the most of a not great situation! Mr. Plotner's third grade class was down to less than half, so he offered up his students to be helpers for the day! They joined us for our math test review and got to be the teachers! First graders and third graders alike loved this experience! After the third grade "teacher" helped their friend do their review page, they switched roles! The first graders got to be the "teacher" and taught their friend to play our first grade version of Yahtzee! It was an afternoon filled with learning and fun! We hope to find more opportunities to buddy up with other classes, but hopefully with all students in attendance! :) Whew! I think we're finally up to date! Keep checking back for more fun in first grade! :) We have been working really hard to earn another rock jar party! The biggest thing we've been working on to earn rocks is transitioning quietly from the carpet, to the line, and to our desks! It's hard to stay quiet and not talk but our hard work was rewarded by a picnic snack followed by a few minutes of playing on the playground...because you can't possibly go outside on a nice sunny day without a little play time! (Sadly, our panoramic picture isn't uploading properly! I will keep working on it!)
