We LOVE Tuesdays and Thursdays because it means COMPUTER LAB TIME! :) Our friends are doing a great job of logging into the computer on their own using their very own username and password. They're also getting familiar with navigating different sites for practice with word work or listening to stories! This is the one time of day where you won't hear a peep out of anyone because they're so focused! :D

We have been learning our Daily 5 routine! This is our literacy block of the day where students participate in independent, pre-taught literacy activities while I pull small groups of students for reading! This is a great way to get extra practice of reading, writing, and word work but it's also important to be independent! But sometimes we need a little partner time! Here are our friends practicing the Daily 5 choice - Read to Someone. We discussed the importance of reading "EEKK" - "Elbow to Elbow, Knee to Knee, Put the book in the middle, So we can both see!" We have been diving into math with a review of number sense concepts from Kindergarten! And what better way to practice math than with...games! Today we played "Bunny Hop", where we practiced counting forwards and backwards on a number line to get our "bunny" to win! We had so much fun and played nicely with our friends! To make our transition from a fun summer into a busy school year a little easier, we took out play-doh several times during the first week of school! It was a good time to have fun but also practice making letters and words! Here are our friends after making their first names! It's only the 2nd day of school, and already I'm blown away by these amazing first graders! We got compliments from every single teacher we saw in the hallway! We've been discussing and practicing expectations at school - in the classroom, bathroom, hallways, etc. We're spending a lot of time on it now so we won't have to review too much later! :)
Monday was the first day of the 2017-18 school year! We had to stop our Morning Meeting for a quick class selfie! (I'm sure this will be one of many!)
I can tell this is going to be a great year! These kiddos are wonderful! For our last day of first grade we celebrated with a "Happy Pig Day" in honor of our Mo Willems author study! We had a great day of pig dances, pig games, and pig activities! :) The Pigeon even popped up throughout the day because he hates to be left out! Thank you for trusting me with your child's education this year. Students and families alike have made my first year at North Ward a great one! I've loved being your child's teacher and feel fortunate to have had such a caring and fun class! I'm also really impressed with the progress I've seen all of my students make! Everyone has come so far this year! I hope everyone enjoys their summer and visits me next year! :) We had an excellent time at the Scovill Zoo in Decatur! It was a beautiful day! Thank goodness there was no rain! I'm impressed with everyone's great behavior and all the parent help we had! Thanks again for everyone who spent the day with us! Over the past few weeks we've been learning all about the author Mo Willems. He is the author and illustrator for lots of funny books and characters! We have so far talked about his Knuffle Bunny series and the Piggie and Elephant series. (This week we will finish up with Pigeon books!) We are focusing on different story elements and the author's craft and style. We recently made our own Piggie and Elephant puppets and buddy read as the characters! It was so much fun! Our publishing party was a huge success! Students stood next to their posters and taught all visitors about their animal! They have really worked hard over the last few weeks, so this was a fun way to celebrate and show off all of our research! For those of you who were unable to attend - check it out! We put together a quick video sharing our favorite fact about our researched animal! (Sorry a few friends were absent! We missed you Logan F. and Kendall!) |
